Learning To Train your Horse

Whether you are looking to train your own horse or to start a career as a horse trainer, we offer a variety of comprehensive courses that will enable you to reach your goal. No matter what your level of expertise, our hands-on training will guide you in the art of Gentle Persuasion, the John Lyons method of horse training that is rooted in the belief that the most effective and enriching ways of instruction lie not in the traditional way of forcing a horse into submission, but rather in a humane, respectful method of conditioned response training and developing a partnership between you and the horse

If you enjoy the company of horses, it’s not hard to imagine the level of fulfillment that comes from a career as a trainer. Not only will it provide you with a way to pursue your passion professionally, but our students from Holland, Spain, Austria, Germany, Scotland, France and Costa Rica will attest to the great demand for this type of training not only in the USA, but in other countries as well.

Courses run anywhere from 2 weeks to two months, depending on your goals and your desired level of involvement. Our most comprehensive course is the 8-week certification. Broken up over 3 months, the course entails one month of training, a one-month break for studying, and then returning for the third and final month to complete the course. Our most complete training program, the 8-week certification course encompasses instruction with both an unbroken horse and one already broke. You will start at the very beginning, learning to work with a horse that knows absolutely nothing, and work your way through every imaginable problem that may arise, culminated with you working with broke horses, and the problems that may come about at that level. Also offered are 2, 4 and 6-week courses, utilizing the same concepts and theories, but covering less ground than the comprehensive 8 week course. You also have the option of starting with one of the shorter courses, and returning for further training at a later date.

Our final program is the Apprentice Program. Enrollment is by selection only, and entails a four-month commitment during which you'll learn all the training involved in the 8 week certification course, as well as giving you the opportunity to pay your tuition by working on the ranch. You will work on horses that are in for training, and will learn by doing all the hands-on details that go into the care and maintenance of healthy horses. Among other things, you will feed, bathe, and care for the horses, as well as learning stall maintenance, and you will not be required to bring any horse to the ranch for the course.

No matter what your needs are, we can recommend a course that would be right for you. And know that whichever course you do decide on, you will learn to apply all ground work to under-saddle. None of the training is specific to any particular discipline of riding; all of our training can be applied to any discipline.
